Uche Ignites Straightforward Crystal Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually secures them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal direct passage to the last 16, particularly following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for several Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were outmatched against a largely rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Dominance Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, fizzing a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
