Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
