Space Traveler Shares Depression After Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, including elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of space.

The group of women also comprised accomplished professionals from various fields.
