EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
